PROGRAM OF WORKS
The Melbourne - Sydney freight market involves an estimated 11 million net tonnes of freight per annum, making it by far the largest general freight market in Australia. Projections indicate that this market will grow considerably over the next few years. The SIA program of works will boost the competitiveness and market share of rail transport in this major freight market. Improvements to the rail corridor will provide increased capacity to haul and distribute freight by rail, helping to reduce potential future pressures on our roads.
SIA has been established to address a range of issues concerning freight rail operations in the Melbourne - Sydney Corridor that currently affect the competitiveness and market share of rail transport. These include:
- the current condition of rail infrastructure
- constraints associated with the corridor alignment that impact transit time
- capacity of the infrastructure to accommodate running passes and crosses of trains
- length and location of lanes along the corridor, and the suitability of these for longer trains
- specific capacity bottlenecks that limit ability to service the market, and clearance limitations that limit efficient above rail operations
The major works program objectives have been set by ARTC and are integral to the South Improvement Alliance agreement. They are:
- Improve Transit time
- Improve Reliability
- Improve Capacity
- Improve Yield (above and below rail)
The program has been given the acronym 'TRaCY'
The South Improvement Alliance will undertake extensive improvement of railway infrastructure, including modernisation of the line’s signalling system and the design and construction of new passing lanes. The works include.
- Single Track Passing Lanes: This involves the construction of new sections of track parallel to the existing track between Somerton and Junee.
- Double Track Passing Lanes:This involves undertaking signal works and providing track infrastructure, between Junee and Picton.
- Tottenham to Dynon (in Melbourne): This involves rearranging the layout of Tottenham Yard, track work and signalling to ease the current bottleneck.
- Sunshine Brooklyn Triangle: This involves the provision of a new track to connect the North-South and East-West lines.
- In Corridor works: This involves the provision of new concrete sleepers, rail rehabilitation, works to increase curve speeds, upgrading signals and improving level crossings.
The works are being delivered as a series of smaller local projects.
