SINGLE TRACK PASSING LANES

Location:
Between Melbourne and Junee

Description of the Project
This project involves the construction of 17 passing lanes between Melbourne and Junee, allowing trains to pass and cross at speed. Currently this 472km long track section is single line only with a number of oddly spaced short crossing loops up to 1.5km in length.

This project involves the construction of an additional second track at regular intervals to create a series of 7km long double track sections. The introduction of passing lanes will permit more efficient train operations, allow for increased operational capacity and improved reliability as well as reduced transit time overall.

Initially five passing lanes will be constructed in NSW:

  1. Gerogery-Table Top
  2. Henty-Culcairn
  3. The Rock-Yerong Creek
  4. Wagga Wagga-Uranquinty
  5. Harefield-Bomen
Following this a further 12 passing lanes are planned in Victoria at sites that have yet to be finalised. A number of options are presently being examined and once locations are finalised, environmental reviews will be undertaken.

Works at each location include signalling, turnouts, track, civil, structures, earthworks, level crossing and drainage works.

Local Government Areas:

NSW
  1. Albury City Council
  2. Greater Hume Shire Council
  3. Junee Shire Council
  4. Lockhart Shire Council
  5. Wagga Wagga City Council

Estimated Cost:
The overall package of works for the 17 passing lanes is budgeted at $261 million.
