TOTTENHAM-DYNON

Location:
Melbourne, Victoria

Description of the Project
Freight train services in and out of the Dynon yard and the Port of Melbourne precinct are currently inefficient as they must slowly traverse a number of single track sections that significantly limits operational capacity and reliability. This project involves track duplication, track upgrading and resignalling from Tottenham to Sims Street Junction. This will improve capacity, accessibility and reliability in this section and allow a smoother more free flowing operation.

Further, trains currently wanting a direct north-south to east-west connection are required to travel into Tottenham Yard and then shunt back out, which increases total transit times. This project involves the construction of a direct link between the North-East Line and the Western Line, between Sunshine and Brooklyn, enabling trains to travel directly in north-south and east-west directions, reducing the number of trains entering the Tottenham area.

In summary, the works will include:

  • A double track between West Footscray Junction and Tottenham Junction.
  • Bi-directional signalling throughout from Sims Street Junction through West Footscray Junction to Tottenham Junction.
  • Enhancing the track layout at Sims Street Junction, West Footscray Junction and Tottenham Junction to achieve operational capacity and full bi-directional operations.
  • Track upgrading, civil and drainage works.
  • Standard Gauge track connection, including the construction of a flyover to the west of Tottenham to link the North-East Line (Sunshine) to the Western Line (Brooklyn).

Timetable:
Planning and design works are currently being undertaken.
Planning approval was received in September 2006 and work is expected to commence in a limited form in the Tottenham area in late 2006 with major works starting mid 2007. Works in the Sunshine – Brooklyn area are not envisaged to commence until late 2007.

The Tottenham-Dynon and Sunshine Brooklyn Triangle projects are being delivered concurrently where possible, to optimise costs, signalling scope and reduce local impacts.
