OTHER IN-CORRIDOR WORKS
In-corridor works will involve the provision of new concrete sleepers, rail rehabilitation, works to increase train speeds, upgrading signals and improving level crossings. In summary, these are:
- Concrete resleepering
- Gauge clearance works
- Other corridor upgrade works
- Reduced Transit Time Projects
Project:
Concrete Resleepering
Location:
Between Melbourne and Macarthur (NSW)
Description of the Project
This project involves the installation of new concrete sleepers along the entire Melbourne-Sydney rail corridor. This is a part of a wider program to upgrade the whole Melbourne to Brisbane corridor with concrete sleepers. Older timber sleepers will be progressively removed and replaced with concrete sleepers. Concrete sleepers reduce the amount of maintenance required, reduce the ongoing need for scarce timber resources and result in more efficient train operations.

This overall package of works is budgeted at $280 million.
Timetable
The section of track Junee and Goulburn is currently in the planning and design phase with construction expected to commence in late 2006/early 2007. Smaller sections in the Moss Vale to Macarthur section of track are also in this phase, with construction scheduled for late 2006.
Some areas have already been successfully upgraded. A small section of track was completed in Picton, NSW, in late May/early June 2006 and an additional section was completed in Yerrinbool, NSW, in September/October 2006.
Works are planned to commence on further sections in the Moss Vale, Tahmoor and Harden areas in late 2006.
Project:
Gauge Clearance Works
Location:
Between Melbourne and Macarthur
Description of the Project
Currently, a number of clearance restrictions on the Melbourne-Sydney line limit the size and shape of the rolling stock and containers. This project aims to increase the clearance levels, which will permit increased train carrying capacity and lead to more efficient rail operations.
Works may include track lowering, use of low-profile sleepers and improved track stability. Potential work sites include:
- Tunnels at Picton, Redbank, Yerrinbool, Gibb and Bethungra.
- Overline bridges at approximately 14 other locations as will be prioritised.
The overall package of works is budgeted at $20 million.
Timetable
Initial investigations on clearance have been completed and an overall prioritisation and delivery program is being developed. Work at critical locations will commence in 2007. Less critical locations will have priorities assessed in 2008 following completion of the majority of the Major works in the corridor.
Project:
Corridor upgrades
Other corridor upgrade works will be undertaken to improve the condition and maintainability of the rail infrastructure and the reliability and performance of track operations.
Description of the project
Works will be delivered in areas where the existing track condition needs to be improved and where the level of maintenance can be reduced by certain works. These works will include:
- Replacing bridge transoms (horizontal beams).
- Resilient fastenings.
- Re-railing and joint straightening.
- Other refurbishment works, such as drainage works.
The overall package of works is budgeted at $75 million.
Timetable:
These works are ongoing between 2006 and 2008. Rerailing works have already been completed in some sections north of Moss Vale. Two bridge transom projects were completed in April 2006. Much of this work will be carried out in conjunction with the laying of new concrete sleepers.
Project:
Reduced Transit Time Projects
Description: Additional works will also be carried out to allow for reduced transit times on a site by site location basis along the entire Melbourne to Macarthur corridor.
Scope: The specific location of the works will be determined during the planning phase. Works will be delivered in areas where transit time savings can be achieved and will include:
- Repositioning and adjust curve speed boards.
- Adjusting curve cant (crossfall) and cant deficiencies in the corridor.
- Improving the mainline track in selected areas.
- Improving the visibility of signals for train drivers.
- Improving level crossings to enhance safety.
The overall package of works is budgeted at $12 million.
Timetable:
These works are ongoing between 2006 and 2008. Much of this work will be carried out in conjunction with the concrete sleeper project.
