CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

During the life of the entire South Improvement Alliance project, particular care has been taken to effectively manage environmental and heritage issues and to minimise the impact on the environment during construction. Environmental protection is paramount throughout the rail corridor with all access points and stockpiling being clearly defined by qualified ecologists.  This ensures protection of significant areas of vegetation.  A heritage study, covering both European and Aboriginal heritage, was undertaken along the full length of the rail corridor.

In addition to adhering to regulatory and statutory requirements, SIA is committed to environmental sustainability and develops a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) for each program of works. A CEMP aims to protect the amenity of the community and provide appropriate mitigation measures for any issues likely to have a direct impact on the community, such as the generation of noise and dust.

Possible impacts of these issues are addressed in each CEMP and emphasis is also placed on the protection of native vegetation, wildlife and waterways. SIA actively engages with all stakeholders throughout the life of each phase of a program to ensure that an environmental balance is maintained. In keeping with our Environment Policy, SIA is committed to enhancing environmental protection wherever possible.

The aim of SIA's Environment Policy is early identification of risks and issues, their potential consequences and mitigation strategies. To view a PDF of the SIA Environment Policy Statement click here.
